Project Celebration Event: Broken Tech, Broken Earth - 26/27 September 2026

Join us at the Centre for Computing History with free museum admission and a weekend special screening of our community-focused Broken Tech, Broken Earth project documentary.
What is the Broken Tech, Broken Earth project?
Over the past two years, the Broken Tech, Broken Earth project has been funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, run by the Museums Association, and has supported our work to engage 150 local community volunteers in exploring the environmental and social impacts of the technology boom.
What has the project achieved?
Together, we have delivered eight events, varying from exhibiting the creation of a community-designed e-waste art sculpture to hosting repair cafés, preventing approximately 2,374kg of CO₂ emissions and 473.5kg of e-waste from going to landfill. We have also designed a new fully subsidised educational visit for local schools, exploring the environmental impacts of AI supply chains to sharing tech career pathways into the decarbonisation sector.
Each event has provided the museum a new opportunity to be creative, experiment with new ideas and explore different ways to engage with the community.
What will the celebration involve?
We plan on screening a community focused documentary which will celebrate the achievements of the project and give visitors the opportunity to hear directly from the volunteers and partners who helped shape it. Tickets will enable a full day entry from 10am-5pm with three 15 minute film screenings happening at 11:30am, 2pm and 4:30pm.
There will also be an opportunity for new visitors to share their ideas about what the museum should do next to explore sustainability through our collections, events and workshops. Everyone who contributes their ideas will receive a £25 Love Cambridge voucher.
Free refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
This event is for everyone, volunteers, new visitors and families. We hope to gather as many people to celebrate and share the achievements of the Broken Tech, Broken Earth project.
