The Homewise Livability Speaker Series, launched in 2023, is a community education program that features local and national experts discussing how housing markets become unaffordable and exploring strategies to manage development for greater affordability, sustainability, and livability. Our 2026 Santa Fe series will take place monthly from July through October.

Long Beach, California is taking ambitious action to expand housing opportunities, address homelessness, and invest in the infrastructure that helps communities thrive. Under Mayor Rex Richardson’s leadership, the city has approved more than 5,000 new homes in just three years, marking its strongest pace of housing production since the 1980s. The city is also expanding homelessness prevention and pathways to permanent housing while making significant investments in infrastructure and neighborhoods. Join us for a conversation with Mayor Richardson about Long Beach’s experience, the policies and partnerships driving its progress, and the ideas and lessons that can inform Santa Fe’s continued work to expand housing opportunities while preserving the qualities that make our community unique.
Rex Richardson is a husband, father, and the 29th Mayor of Long Beach. Mayor Richardson’s history in Long Beach is grounded in empowering communities to have a seat at the table. On the national level, Mayor Richardson serves on the Advisory Board of the United States Conference of Mayors. Regionally, Richardson is Chair of the Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency and has previously served as past President of the Southern California Association of Governments. Richardson is also a Mayoral Co-Chair of Mayors and CEOs for U.S. Housing Investment, a bipartisan coalition of leaders dedicated to increasing housing access across the nation. His track record of pursuing positive change for his community has left an indelible mark on the entire city. He has continually worked alongside neighborhood leaders to bring vital public safety, economic, and community investments to Long Beach. Mayor Richardson and his wife, Dr. Nina Richardson, are proudly raising their two young daughters, Alina and Mila, in the North Long Beach community. He believes that everyone, no matter their circumstance, deserves the opportunity to thrive.
