Yorkshire people are famous for their common sense and ‘nouse’ but the roots of nous and common sense are firmly seated in classical philosophy.
In his Inaugural Lecture, Professor David Sheard will make a positive call to refocus our NHS and Social Care services on emotional intelligence, as this kind of nous has not always been central to health and social care.
Emotional intelligence has been defined as the ability to perceive, use, understand, manage and handle emotions.
During the pandemic we have all been only a flicker away from our own emotional vulnerability.
Professor Sheard will honour the thousands of managers, nurses, health and social care staff, who have instinctively given their heart, soul and tireless effort during the pandemic to ‘being there’ for people. He will sadly acknowledge that they are facing a further pandemic of emotional burn out through the heightening of emotions at work.
Addressing this, Professor Sheard will argue that there is an urgent need for an injection of emotional intelligence towards our NHS and Social Care Services in order to support staff’s emotional labour at work and to prevent person centred care turning into a cliché for staff.
