This professional development workshop will help teachers prepare for the coming school year. Perfect for pre-service teachers and those seeking to build their understanding of race in America, the program will guide teachers through primary sources from the museum's collections and provide sample lesson plans on 18th century enslavement in Connecticut. Historiography, or the understanding of how history has been taught in the past, will be used to show teachers how written sources can be used to expose biases in both the past and the present. Teachers will also receive instruction on how to discuss topics of race in the classroom.The workshop will be led by the curatorial and education staff from the museum using elements from KTM&HC's award-winning programs. The workshop will focus on grades 4-12 and is applicable for those teaching history, non-fiction, primary sources, and those preparing for the Black and Latinx Studies courses recently required by the state of Connecticut.
Maximum 30 participants per day.
