MEDEL HEADLINES AS PROFESSIONAL BOXING RETURNS TO ST. PAUL

Leo Medel of Apple Valley, Minn., has been boxing as a professional for five years, putting together an impressive 9-0 record.

On Aug. 3, he will attempt to keep his record perfect as he headlines the "Return to the Capital" event at the Jump City Gym, located at 1166 University Ave. in St. Paul. The 8-fight card is being promoted by Extreme Maximus Boxing and Big Q Promotions.

Tickets for the event are available from participating fighters or online at Nitrotickets.com and Eventbrite.com. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the first fight at 6 p.m.

Weigh-ins on Aug. 2 are set for the Midway Saloon at 6 p.m. It is open to the public. Following the fights, the official after-party also will be held at the Midway Saloon, located at 1567 University Ave. W in St. Paul.

"It's always better to fight at home ... it gives my friends and family a chance to come ans watch," Medel said. "We have three of us from the gym fighting and we've been training very hard."

Medel fights out of CMB Gym in Burnsville, Minn., under Oscar Chavez.

In the co-main event, Austin "Ozzy" Judge of Bloomington, Minn., will make his boxing debut following a successful 14-7-1 record in mixed martial arts. His opponent, Zach Hill of Watertown, S.D., has fought 10 times, facing four opponents with undefeated records, including Omar Rosario of Puerto Rico, who was 9-0 at the time.

Other local fighters on the card include: Arath Luna, Justus Pomeroy, Robert Copeland, Michael Demps, Sean Stebbins and Lawrence Sanders.
