A collection of music degree holders and teachers, the band brings everything from trad, to swing, to klezmer - a toe-tapping happy time!
The Starvation Army Band was founded in 1989 as an offshoot of the Columbia Concert Band specializing in Traditional Jazz. Since then, the Band has broadened its repertoire to include Klezmer and Swing as well. The Band has performed at numerous venues throughout the Baltimore-Washington area, including regular appearances at the Columbia Lakefront concerts, Columbia Festival of the Arts, Vantage House, the Longfellow July 4 parade, and the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington as well as performing for numerous special events. The Band typically uses 6 musicians: Bill Yakaitis, the clarinet and tenor saxophone player; Brian Priebe, the trombonist and vocalist; Tom Harwick, the tuba and bass player; Greg Mack, the drummer; Jerry Fleg, the SAB’s trumpeter and leader; and Larry Haavik, the pianist.
Rosensteel Hall is only a few blocks away from the Forest Glen metro (red line), has ample parking, plenty of seating, a great dance floor, and a cash bar with soft drinks, alcohol and some snacks. Come on over and check it out!
