About this Event
The Potomac River Jazz Club is proud to present in concert New Orleans’ own banjo and guitar virtuoso Don Vappie, backed by the local Conservatory Classic Jazz Band.
Mr. Vappie is an internationally-celebrated exponent of the New Orleans banjo tradition and Creole culture. He was the subject of a PBS documentary aired nationally, and was inducted into the American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame. He plays often with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
The popular Conservatory Classic Jazz Band has been playing trad jazz and swing regularly in the DC area since 2003. Their repertoire encompasses the music of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Bessie Smith, Eddie Condon, Benny Goodman and other early jazz pioneers. Originally affiliated with a local music conservatory, the band now operates independently. The members of the Conservatory Classic Jazz Band have deep experience in jazz education, and conducting workshops and “informances” about America’s early jazz heritage remains a part of our mission.
Potomac River Jazz Club (PRJC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1971 whose mission is to support and preserve original New Orleans jazz music. Our monthly concerts are held at Rosensteel Hall in Silver Spring, MD. The venue is near the Forest Glen metro (red line), has plenty of parking, table and chair seating, a large dance floor, and a cash bar with some snacks.
