Print & Sip | Cyanotype printing workshop with artist Flora Kao

Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) located at 3601 S. Gaffey St., is pleased to present Print & Sip, a 21+ cyanotype printing workshop and social event presented with artist Flora Kao. The event will take place on Saturday, August 1st from 2pm to 4 pm at Angels Gate Cultural Center. Tickets are free with a suggested donation of $20 at the door.
In conjunction with the exhibition Built on Water, Print & Sip will give community members the opportunity to actively engage in the cyanotype printing process used by the artist in her work currently on view at AGCC. Objects and drawings will be placed on photosensitive surfaces to create beautiful silhouettes and patterns on paper and fabric.
- Participants are encouraged to bring their own small personally significant flat objects or writing for use in their compositions. Natural materials and other miscellaneous will also be available for use.
- Each participant will create two complimentary sun prints to take home.
- Print & Sip is a 21+ event with limited registration.
- Complimentary beverages and refreshments will be provided.
- In addition to the artist led workshop participants will receive an exclusive walk though of Flora Kao’s installations inspired by the Japanese American experience on Terminal Island. Artist and attendees will explore the themes of Built on Water in open dialogue.
Built on Water is made possible with support from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles, the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach, and the Los Angeles County Department of Art and Culture.
Flora Kao works in installation and painting to transform everyday structures into systems of introspection and beauty by exploring the poetics of human relationship with environment. Her work in Built on Water excavates layered histories beneath the Port, exploring meaning through place and memory while investigating the historic significance of San Pedro for Southern California’s Japanese-American community. Flora Kao is an internationally exhibited artist who holds an MFA from UC Irvine in Studio Art, a BFA in Painting from Otis College of Art and Design, and a BA in Environmental Science and Public Policy from Harvard College.
About Angels Gate Cultural Center
Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s that created art studios and exhibition space within the WWII era army barracks of Angels Gate Park near the Port of Los Angeles. Today, AGCC hosts over 50 artist studios in addition to a variety of programs to engage the diverse communities of the Los Angeles Harbor region, including arts education in local schools, community classes, cultural events, and exhibitions of contemporary art.
