About this course

Print and Stitch is an ideal course for those who are new to printmaking and embroidery. Or for those with some experience but who want to learn how these two disciplines can be combined.

Using the collagraph printing process as the starting point for creating imagery on fabric using pattern, colour and texture, you will then embellishing the prints with simple embroidery stitches to add detail.

You will learn and explore how both print and stitch techniques are developed by looking at and discussing other artists’ and embroiderers’ work and by demonstrations, personal experimentation and individual tuition on how to make and print your collagraph plate and how to create a range of simple stitches to enhance your image.

By the end of the course everyone will have produced good quality work combining both techniques to mount and exhibit or to give as gifts.

The course will involve:

- Looking at and discussing how other artists and embroiderers have created their work.

- Using drawing to create an initial design based on learners' own drawings or photographs. (Those new to drawing can work from others imagery).

- Using textured paper and thread and scribed (scratched) lines to create a collagraph plate.

- Becoming familiar with printmaking and embroidery equipment and learning the correct terminology.

- Mixing and using water soluble inks to print collagraph plates onto a range of fabrics using effective colourways.

- Printing using a printing press.

- Producing an embroidery sampler.

- Using stitch creatively to embellish prints.
