ABOUT THE ART FORM
Nautanki is a traditional form of folk theatre from North India, known for its lively storytelling, music, dance, and dramatic performances. It features colorful costumes, elaborate sets, and exaggerated acting, with themes drawn from historical events, mythology, and social issues. Historically, Nautanki was the most popular form of entertainment in rural North India before the rise of cinema.
Performances can be held in any open or closed space, from village squares to town halls, attracting audiences of hundreds or even thousands. The stage is typically elevated, open on three sides, with a colorful backdrop on the fourth. Musicians and percussionists sit to one side, while actor-singers perform at the center. Key instruments include the stringed harmonium, nakkara, and dholak drums.
