Prime Fights: Building Power @ Amazon & Beyond

Organising Amazon is a strategic priority for trade unions. With millions of workers worldwide, Amazon has transformed the warehouse industry, pioneering automation & surveillance to intensify work, fiercely resisting all attempts at unionisation.

In Sheffield and South Yorkshire warehousing has become a boom industry following the destruction of coal, steel & engineering jobs. Local workers face exploitation at Amazon and the many other warehouses that imitate their working practices.

Speakers:

Mary Hill – a long-timer worker at Amazon’s massive RDU1 warehouse in North Carolina, Vice-President of CAUSE, called out Jeff Bezos the day before the Met Gala.

Galen Zavala Sherby - a Nicaraguan born Teamster at his Amazon facility in Kentucky, he knows that organizing Amazon’s largely immigrant workforce is a do-or-die struggle for workers.

Tom Vickers – is the author of , a study of GMB’s organising campaign at BHX4 Coventry, which led to skyrocketing union membership & a 37-day strike that led to a 28.5% pay rise.

Jonathan Rosenblum - is activist, trade unionist, part-time Amazon delivery driver, and author of .

Dave Pike – is Regional Secretary for the Trades Union Congress in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, committed growing the union movement.

Following talks and refreshments, breakout sessions will explore workers’ experiences in warehouse and logistics, the challenges of organising at Amazon & what can be gained by building power against this corporate giant.
