Join MCE as trainer Li Qing prepares your child for Term 3 with the use of heuristics!
About this Event

Every year, students in Singapore taking the PSLE Mathematics paper face the mammoth task of solving challenging real-life word problems within a short period of time to do well in Mathematics. This task requires students to be well-versed in the Mathematical concepts and to be able to apply the various heuristic methods to both routine and non-routine questions.

Imagine yourself as a detective trying to solve a mystery. You need to pick up clues, think of ways to find the missing links, piece together all the puzzles and devise solutions before you can crack the case. Solving challenging word problems in Mathematics is akin to a detective solving a case, students can have fun while learning new strategies to cope with the ever-changing word problems.

In this workshop, your child will get to:

  • Be equipped with the intellectual tools on how to pick up critical clues and irrelevant distractors in a word problem
  • Analyse, devise and apply effective ways and strategies to obtain all the important clues to solve the problem
  • Counter-check the solution using other heuristics learnt before to arrive at the answer

Heuristics for P4

These strategies include the various model drawing approaches such as before-after, working-backwards, comparison, part-whole and distribution. Other non-routine approaches such as flow-chart analysis of word problems, restating the problem and guess-and-check approach will also be covered in this workshop.

A wide range of challenging word problems covering topics such as whole numbers, fractions, decimals and area and perimeter will be discussed in this workshop.

Do note that the workshop will be conducted physically at the Times Centre. Should there be any changes to the regulations by the government, the workshop will be conducted online instead.

Speaker's Profile: Ms Wong Li Qing

Wong Li Qing holds an Honours degree in Materials Engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and a Post-graduate Diploma in Education (Credit) from the National Institute of Education (NIE). She goes to various local government schools to teach as a MOE (flexi-adjunct) teacher, and also teaches part-time at the ITE colleges and at a tuition centre.

Throughout her dedicated teaching career, Li Qing has been actively involved in sharing sessions on mathematical concepts and methodology experience through departmental research, expertise workshops and educational conferences.

With over 13 years of training children in learning skills in Mathematics in Singapore, Li Qing has developed a system of techniques that is consistent with the heuristic approach to build on the foundation of “Singapore Math’. These techniques are simple to apply and have been proven to be effective in solving various challenging word problems.
