Chosen Family: Housing Justice, Community and Belonging

Saturday 25 July 2026 | Leeds
MOODS, 98 KIRKGATE, LEEDS, LS2 7DJ

What does it mean to find home when traditional systems fail us? What does community look like when chosen family becomes a necessity rather than a choice?

Chosen Family is a one day community event hosted by Pride of Place: Living, bringing together LGBTQ+ people, allies, community organisations and local residents for an afternoon of conversation, connection and cultural exchange centred on housing justice and belonging.

While Pride is often celebrated in June, the realities facing many LGBTQ+ people continue long after the parades end. Across the UK, housing insecurity, homelessness and social isolation disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ communities, particularly Black and brown individuals, migrants, refugees and those navigating family rejection. This event is an opportunity to come together, learn from one another and explore how community care can help create pathways towards safety, dignity and stability.

At the heart of the day is Pride of Place's Inclusion Project, which works to support LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing housing insecurity while building stronger networks of community and belonging. Through open conversations and community engagement, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of housing justice and the role Pride of Place Living can all play in supporting the most vulnerable among us.

What to Expect
Panel Discussion: Who is Pride of Place and Why Housing Justice Matters?

Hear from community leaders, housing advocates and organisations working directly with LGBTQ+ communities. Together, they will explore Pride of Place's Inclusion Project, housing inequality, homelessness, migration, chosen family and the importance of creating support systems that leave no one behind.

There will also be an opportunity for audience questions and discussion.

Queer Kizomba Session

Inspired by The Blacker The Berry's Queer Kizomba Sessions, led by Emanuel Carlos and Bruna Teixeira, this optional afternoon session will use movement and dance to explore connection, culture and community. Open to all levels, the session offers a welcoming environment to engage with others through shared experience.

Community Book and Literature Space

Following our collaboration with The Bookish Type, throughout the day, attendees will be able to browse a curated selection of books and resources exploring themes of identity, belonging, migration, housing and community. This space is designed to encourage conversation, reflection and connection.

Meet Community Organisations

Learn more about the work being carried out by local and national organisations supporting LGBTQ+ people, refugees, migrants and those experiencing housing insecurity.

Refreshments

Light refreshments, snacks and soft drinks will be available throughout the event.

Who is this Event For?

This event is open to everyone, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ communities, especially Black and brown individuals, migrants, refugees, people experiencing housing insecurity and those interested in community building, social justice and housing advocacy.

Whether you are looking to connect with others, learn more about housing justice, discover local support networks or simply spend time in a welcoming space, you are warmly invited to join us.

We are committed to making this event as accessible as possible. Accessibility information, including venue access details and support provisions, will be updated once the venue is confirmed.
