Dr. Nicholas Mathew, Professor of Music at UC-Berkeley and a noted Beethoven expert, will enhance our knowledge of Beethoven's only opera. Author of the 2013 study Political Beethoven, he specializes in the relationship of Beethoven's music to the culture of his time. One of his books, Political Beethoven (2013), studies the relationship between LvB's music and the politics of his day. Another essay collection, The Invention of Beethoven and Rossini (this one co-edited) studies the "history of the fraught opposition between [Beethoven and Rossini], and the artistic and philosophical traditions they came to represent." Dr. Mathew is also, like Beethoven, a pianist, and curates the Berkeley music department's collection of 19th century pianos.
ADMISSION: $10/PERSON, with Covid-19 vaccination card. Masks are required. Due to ongoing Covid concerns, there will be no refreshments for this preview.
We begin promptly at 7:30 and conclude at 9 pm.
Please note: This is a recurring event because it is one in an ongoing, annual series of "opera previews" (or talks, if you prefer) designed to help its audiences explore San Francisco Opera's opera performances.
