Why attend?

This conference will feature presentations from consultants with long-standing experience in implementing and leading prevention programs in First Nations communities. These initiatives will be child-centered, family-focused, community-driven, and Nation-based. Establishing and implementing a multi-service prevention model to address complex social issues and respond to families’ needs is challenging but vital work - this conference will support your community in carrying it out. Children are our future, and the ultimate goal is to create quality, culturally safe family environments that enable them to reach their full potential, thereby strengthening Nations and enhancing the well-being of all. Regardless of the stage or development phase of the Prevention department, this conference will address your needs.

Who Should Attend?

Child and family service workers, prevention staff, community leaders, program managers, including post majority care workers and First Nations representative service workers/liaisons and anyone passionate about prevention strategies for First Nations communities.

Presentations include:

Spectrum of Protection and Prevention

Have you ever wondered what the differences are between Protection and Prevention within the First Nation Child and Family Services program (FNCFS)? Find out the differences between the two programs funded through FNCFS, what the requirements are for each, what program is responsible for what service, and where there is overlap.

Engaging Families, Motivating Change

In this session audience members will learn about the importance of engaging families in Prevention programming. Engaging families is a strengths-based approach that creates positive outcomes for families by encouraging and empowering them to make decisions, problem solve, and work towards their own goals.

Post Majority Support Services

Post majority support services is a program through First Nations Child and Family Services (FNCFS) that provides support to youth aging out of the child welfare system or young adults who were formerly in care up to the age of 26. Post-majority care funding gives service providers the ability to develop and deliver programs and services that meet the unique needs of youth in care. Find out how your community can access this funding and develop a Post Majority Support program.

Empowering Roots: Engaging Indigenous Youth through Culture, Ceremony, and Community

This interactive workshop explores strength-based strategies for engaging Indigenous youth through culturally grounded, land-based, and ceremonial activities. Drawing on Indigenous Ways of Knowing, the session emphasizes the importance of relationship-building, identity and culture reclamation, and community connection in fostering wellness, purpose, and belonging.

Through discussion, storytelling, and example-based activities, this session will provide inspiration and tools for educators, counsellors, and community workers who seek to walk alongside Indigenous youth in meaningful and culturally respectful ways.

Teepee teachings

In this session, the presenter will share teachings passed down through generations. The teepee serves as a symbol of community, kinship, and womanhood. The values shared within the lodge will be connected to prevention efforts and the needs within the community.

Parenting programs

Learning about parent programs is essential for prevention because they strengthen family bonds, support emotional development, and reduce risks like substance use and violence. Parent programs also help address intergenerational trauma by reconnecting families with culturally grounded parenting practices, especially in Indigenous communities. In doing so, they directly support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, particularly those focused on child welfare and culturally appropriate parenting education.

Documentation and Reporting

Documentation and managing records are an important piece in Prevention work that can sometimes be pushed to the side of our desks. Learn tips on record keeping and how to write and manage case documentation in this interactive session that will keep you on top of your work and support positive outcomes for your clients.

Lateral Kindness

Lateral Violence is a major issue on many First Nations and in many First Nations organizations today. Unlike other types of violence, lateral violence is an attack on emotions which can affect one’s spirit. This type of behaviour does not align with the Indigenous worldview. Learn about the tools you need to recognize lateral violence, share knowledge and ideas on responding to it within your organization.
