About this Event
Please join the League of Women Voters of Greater Rockford (LWVGR), Rockford Area Moms Demand Action (RAMDA), and the Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence (NICNE) as we build upon the momentum of work being done to prevent youth gun violence in the Rockford area.
Your presence and perspective are vital. Join us as we turn our collective efforts into a lasting framework and approach to drive change.
At the March meeting, we will provide an introduction to the youth leadership model and the youth-led leadership table. Work within Phase 4 of this initiative will serve to integrate and support youth leaders and build wraparound support from community partners in an advisory role. With youth gun possession identified as the key issue to address through this initiative, root causes and solutions will be explored in partnership with youth leaders, adults, and community leaders.

Why are we working to address youth gun possession and gun violence? Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens. Annually, more than 4,300 children and teens (ages 0 to 19) are shot and killed, and more than 17,000 are shot and wounded—that’s an average of 60 children and teens in the US, every day. An estimated three million children witness a shooting each year; Black and Latinx children and teens are impacted by gun violence at higher rates than their white peers. Gun violence can be reduced by addressing the root causes of youth gun possession.
