Have you been to Church Square recently? When last have you experienced the colours, sounds and character of Pretoria’s city centre?On the 7th of October, Church Square opens its doors to the public, showcasing its treasures and attractions, as well as it’s unknown, unused, or overlooked marvels. Walk in the footsteps of Mandela, find the spectacular Capitol Theatre, visit Paul Kruger’s office in the Raadsaal, get a rooftop view of the square - and more!
As part of the day’s programme, guests are also invited to attend the vibey city arts and culture project, Market@theSheds at City Property’s 012central precinct. The day is about re-discovering the capital - looking past the potholes and problems - at the possibilities and potential of a city rich with traditions and tales, old and new.
The Church Square Revival Project is a Public Private Community initiative working towards the rejuvenation of Church Square as a tourist destination and public space. Making the area cleaner and more accessible is seen as the first step in the overall goal of creating a healthy public square with empty or underused buildings activated into vibrant community assets. It is also seen as a way to boost the revitalisation of Pretoria’s inner core.
A communications gap has kept stakeholders, government institutions and development assistance groups apart for too long, preventing us from being aware of our common interest, and realising our combined power. Fortunately, the gap is closing and we are starting to realise that what unites us is vastly more important than what divides us. We need to Make Common Cause.
The CSRP project is driven by a group of people from the community as well as the private and public sector, and includes the City of Tshwane Municipality, Capital Collective NPO, TMPD, SAPS, the Pretoria Society of Advocates and City Property Administration. Shops, property owners and businesses in the area as well as the community on the ground are also being engaged, encouraging involvement and support.
