The art of fermenting food is not new, in fact it is one of the oldest forms of preservation methods. However, its popularity has soared in recent times as we become more educated about gut health and how much this effects our overall health - and the inclusion of fermented food in our diet is just one of the ways we can improve it.
Fermented foods can be purchased commercially, but making your own is actually very easy and the taste is worlds apart from what you can purchase in the store. Once you know how, you'll never go back to buying them!
In this hands on preserving workshop, we will make several fermented goods that are very easy for beginners, including:
- Sauerkraut, with your own choice of spices to suit your tastes
- Korean Kimchi
- Lacto-fermented Carrots
- Kombucha
You will prepare all the above items yourself to take home.
In addition to making these ferments, we will discuss everything you need to know about the fermentation process, equipment and tools and how you can experiment with other vegetables and flavours as you gain confidence!
Included in this workshop:
- Make and take home your own fermented goods
- Recipe cards for everything you make, including how to continue looking after your ferments (because the magic is yet to happen!)
- Your own Kilner Airlock Fermenting Jar so you can see the difference in how ferments behave in different vessels (valued at $30!)
- A Kombucha Scoby to start your booch!
- Aprons to wear in class
- Small class numbers for individual attention
- All equipment provided, including food grade jars for your ferments and a tote bag to take everything home
- PLUS taste tests of all the above with a Ploughman Platter style grazing board to enjoy after all your hard work is done.
If you've never made your own fermented foods before, this is a great place to start as you will see just how easy it is to turn delicious seasonal produce into an entirely new product that can keep up to 12 months (that's if you don't eat it sooner!)
Duration: 2.5-3 Hours
