When: Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 4 p.m.Where: Leighton Concert Hall
Saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart and pianist Grégory Privat bring a silky, searching energy to a free afternoon concert, combining the spirit of post-bop jazz with Caribbean rhythms, African pulse, and European classical colors. It's jazz that knows where it comes from and isn't afraid to wander somewhere new.
The duo represents two generations of pioneers of Afro-Caribbean jazz, from the two sister islands of the Antilles: Guadeloupe and Martinique. Formerly a Parisian senator's assistant and an engineer, both were born on December 22, 22 years apart, escaped their office jobs to play nights in Parisian jazz clubs, and have now worked together for 22 years effortlessly trading ideas in real time: saxophone lines unspool over delicate yet dense piano textures, sometimes reflective, sometimes incendiary. It's the kind of set where you lean in closer, catching the spaces between the notes as much as the notes themselves.
You'll hear echoes of Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, and plenty that's entirely their own. Every phrase feels alive, shaped in the moment, grounded in tradition but never stuck in it, thanks to Schwarz-Bart's influences from playing with everyone from Roy Hargrove and Chucho Valdes to Eric Benét to Meshell Ndegeocello. Even for the jazz-curious, this one's got enough heart and groove to pull you in.
