About this Event
Emily Carr is renowned primarily as a painter, but her journey into the public eye began with her writing. Her debut book, Klee Wyck ("Laughing One"), published in 1941, honours the name given to her by the Indigenous peoples of the West Coast. This collection of short stories shares her experiences living among Native communities, capturing the beauty of their totem poles and villages in remote landscapes. With a striking blend of beauty, pathos, and humor, Carr’s writing resonated with both critics and readers, earning her the esteemed Governor General's Award and remaining in print ever since. This engaging, multimedia 90 presentation runs 90 minutes and features audio selections of stories from Klee Wyck, accompanied by the paintings she created in the very locations she describes
