Preparing for Divorce: A Decision-Making Workshop for Women
About this Event
About the event
Divorce requires a lot of decisions — often before you feel ready to make them.
The house. Bank accounts. Retirement. Debt. Vehicles. Personal property. Parenting. Support. Taxes. Businesses. Insurance.
Before you can effectively negotiate, settle, or tell professionals what you want them to act on, you need to understand what needs to be decided and what matters to you.
This 90-minute workshop is designed to help you do exactly that.
What We'll Work Through
Together, we'll walk through the major areas that may need to be addressed during divorce, including:
- Home & Property: Your marital home, other real estate, household property, appliances, jewelry, sentimental items and other tangible assets
- Banking & Retirement: Checking and savings accounts, investments, stocks, bonds, retirement accounts, pensions and other financial assets
- Debt & Financial Obligations: Mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, personal loans, business debt and other financial obligations
- Vehicles & Business Assets: Cars, recreational vehicles, business interests, equipment and other significant assets
- Parenting Decisions: Parenting schedules, holidays, transportation, communication, decision-making, children's needs and the provisions that matter most to you
- Support, Taxes & Settlement: Spousal support considerations, income, taxes, selling or keeping assets, settlement tradeoffs and questions that may require professional guidance
You'll also begin separating:
What you know.
What you still need to find out.
What matters most.
What you're willing to negotiate.
What you aren't ready to agree to.
What needs professional advice before you decide.
What You'll Leave With
Your registration includes a guided Divorce Decision-Making Workbook that you'll work through during the session.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have started organizing:
- What you own and owe
- The decisions that still need to be made
- Your priorities and non-negotiables
- Information and documents you still need
- Questions to take to your attorney, CPA, financial professional or other specialist
- Your next steps for moving forward
You do not need to arrive with everything figured out.
That's the purpose of the workshop. Not to figure it all out, but to get organized and articualte
Who This Workshop Is For
This workshop is for women considering, preparing for, or currently navigating divorce in Oregon who want to become more informed and organized before making major decisions.
You may be preparing to file, already working with an attorney, representing yourself, preparing for mediation, exchanging settlement proposals, or simply realizing you need a better understanding of the decisions in front of you.
The goal isn't to prepare for a bigger fight. It's to become better prepared for the decisions ahead.
What to Expect
This is a guided educational working session — not a support group or processing space.
Caroline will lead the workshop and walk you through each decision area while you work independently in your own workbook.
Questions are welcome throughout the session. However, we won't use workshop time to process, vent about, or extensively discuss individual relationship circumstances. This allows us to stay focused and make the full 90 minutes useful for everyone attending.
You are never expected to share personal details, financial information, or the circumstances of your divorce with the group.
Come with your questions. Do the work alongside us. Leave more informed and organized about the decisions ahead.
What to Bring
Bring a pen and, if you'd like, a notebook. Bring your laptop if that's easier.
You may also bring information that helps you think through your circumstances — such as approximate account balances, a list of assets or debts, or notes about parenting considerations — for your own private reference.
Please leave original financial, legal, or irreplaceable documents at home.
Privacy & Safety
Attendance is limited to 8 registered women.
Once the workshop begins, the main office door remains locked for the entirety of the session, creating a private, uninterrupted environment where participants can focus on the work in front of them.
Participants are expected to respect the privacy of the other women attending and not share identifying information about participants outside of the workshop.
If attending an in-person divorce-related event creates a specific safety concern for you, please contact us before the workshop so we can discuss practical arrival or departure considerations.
Parking & Arrival
Free off-street parking is available behind the building.
Additional metered street parking and a nearby parking garage are also available.
Please plan to arrive a few minutes early. Because the office door is secured once the workshop begins, late entry may not be available.
About the Facilitator
Caroline Fithen, MA works at the intersection of family transition, women's autonomy, child and family outcomes, and the systems families rely on during difficult seasons. Her background includes Clinical Mental Health Counseling, domestic violence advocacy, child abuse prevention, batterer intervention, coercive control, and legal and civil systems work.
Her work is also informed by lived experience navigating divorce in Lane County, changing family dynamics, and the realities of raising children through and beyond family transition — giving her perspective from both sides of the systems she works alongside.
Today, Caroline supports women through educational workshops and a limited Divorce & Family Strategy 1:1 client caseload, helping them understand complex situations, make informed decisions, and navigate systems with greater clarity and autonomy.
She also operates Facing Giants, a community-based space bringing education, prevention, resources, and community around children and families navigating adversity. Its work is designed to strengthen children and the adults supporting them through opportunities for connection, self-exploration, practical skills, safety and violence-prevention education, and continued growth.
Across her work, Caroline's focus is on better long-term outcomes for women and children — during difficult transitions and in the life that continues afterward.

Important Scope Note
This workshop provides divorce education, organization and decision-making support. It does not provide legal, tax, investment or individualized financial advice and is not mental health treatment.
We will not determine your legal rights or tell you what you should request in your individual divorce.
Instead, this workshop helps you understand the decisions in front of you, identify your priorities, organize the information you need, and become better prepared to advocate for yourself and your children.
The clearer you are about what matters, what you want to accomplish, and where you still need professional guidance, the more effectively you can use the professionals around you. Attorneys, mediators, financial professionals and other specialists have a clearer starting point for advising, advocating and moving the work forward. That clarity can also help you use paid professional time more intentionally — bringing your attorney the legal questions that require their expertise, rather than paying legal rates to sort through questions, decisions or emotional processing that can be worked through elsewhere. Being organized, prepared and able to clearly articulate your priorities may also help reduce unnecessary professional fees while allowing your attorney to focus their time on the legal work only they can do.
And ultimately, that's part of the goal: to create more time and mental bandwidth for you to keep living your life while navigating the very real work of divorce. When every question, document and decision isn't competing for space in your head, you have more capacity for your children, your work, your health, your relationships — and the life that is still happening while your divorce is being resolved.
