About this Event

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic, treatable medical condition, yet stigma often prevents patients from seeking the care they need. At least 5% of pregnant women use one or more addictive substances.

Join Metro Health and special guest Dr. Kelly McGlothen-Bell, PhD, RN, IBCLC - nurse scientist, health equity scholar, and Assistant Professor at the UT San Antonio School of Nursing — for an in-person Community Conversation exploring how stigma, healthcare practices, and policies shape the experiences of pregnant and parenting people affected by substance use.

This special event for healthcare providers will feature powerful personal stories from women with lived experience of SUD during pregnancy and will examine how stigma, healthcare interactions, and compassionate care influence treatment and recovery. Participants will also learn practical, evidence-based strategies providers can use to improve patient care and outcomes.

Objectives:

• Examine how stigma and provider attitudes affect trust, engagement, and access to treatment.
• Recognize how interpersonal and structural stigma shape healthcare experiences, trust, and recovery engagement among pregnant and parenting people affected by substance use.
• Describe how reproductive justice principles support family-centered care, including autonomy, dignity, and parenting in safe, supportive environments.
• Identify opportunities for clinicians, researchers, and community partners to create conditions that promote trust, engagement, and family-centered recovery.
• Learn about community resources available to support patients and families.
• Connect with other healthcare professionals dedicated to improving maternal and community health.

CME/CNE credit will be offered for eligible participants.
