Practice Makes Purpose

This isn't a typical artist talk but a journey with an artist as they share their practice, pivots, and purpose.

This month's guest is Phillip Loken. Phillip "King Phill" Loken is a Fine-Art Ethnographic and Documentary Photographer from Raleigh, North Carolina, currently based in Mebane, North Carolina. Through themes of authenticity, belonging, community, and pride, Phillip's work focuses on Pan-African cultural commonalities found across subcultures and countercultures of the Black American South, which are applicable to the global human experience.Loken has exhibited at The Southeastern Center for Photography, South Carolina's ArtFields 2024 competition, and recently featured in the group exhibition "It Ain't All Black & White" at DAG's Truist Gallery.

Phillip is currently working on his first documentary film, "Gee's Bend: Welcome To The Hole," his first solo exhibition, and an archival project funded by VAE Raleigh and the Andy Warhol Foundation centering Black families in Raleigh.
