Chinese swordsmanship runs the gamut of graceful and artistic to close quarters striking and wrestling with the sword. At this event, guest instructor
John Partika will give attendees a sample of the full range of Chinese swordplay using both the Chinese saber (dao), and the straight sword (jian).
This event will be focused on practical swordsmanship, showing how the techniques practiced in the forms can be applied in sparring and competition, decoding the flourishes and fancy movements of the forms to show their real world applications. Students will get the chance to see how Chinese swordsmanship differs from other systems of fencing and swordplay, as well as the similarities between these systems of fighting.
Day one will focus on the dao, the single-handed Chinese saber. Students will learn the basics of cutting, thrusting and deflecting with the weapon, learn the terminology and theory of Daofa (saber method), as well as get a sample for the in-close striking, checking and grappling that sets Daofa apart from other types of Chinese sword work.
Day two will highlight the jian, the Chinese straight sword. This sword, double-edged and wickedly pointed, was often called the "scholar's sword" and was a weapon of civilian dueling and self defense. Students will learn how the jian differs from the dao, and how this sword compares to other single-handed, double-edged weapons from across the world. Footwork, stance, cutting and deflecting will all be covered, with additional time given to theory and how to make attack and defense a single motion.
Plenty of time will be set aside for sparring as well, so students will have the opportunity to test what they have learned, both in free swordplay and coached bouts!
Sign up today to reserve your spot and get a taste of traditional, practical Chinese swordsmanship!
