Code Name Madeleine is the valiant story of Noor Inayat Khan, the daughter of a Sufi master, whose compassionate courage led her to fight the Nazis. Raised in the 1920s near Paris, Noor was an introspective musician and writer, dedicated to her father’s spiritual values of harmony, beauty, and tolerance. Germany’s treatment of Jews convinced her to abandon Gandhi’s pacifism; for if not, she concluded, she would have colluded with the Nazi regime. Trained in espionage, sabotage, and reconnaissance by Britain’s top-secret SOE, Noor became its only radio operator in much of France, sending information which significantly aided the success of D-Day. When captured, Noor attempted two daring escapes from a Gestapo prison in Paris, only to be shackled in solitary for 10 months. Executed at Dachau, her last word was “libertè” (liberty). Noor’s ideals were grounded in Sufism’s equivalent of tikkun olam – a chivalry that upheld selflessness, justice, and duty “as sacred as religion.” Code Name Madeleine is a compelling, deeply researched history and thrilling tribute to Noor Inayat Khan
