Powering the AI Buildout: Data Centers, Public Power, & Municipal Market
About this Event
Powering the AI Buildout: Data Centers, Public Power, and the Municipal Market
The data center and municipal utility nexus is one of the most consequential storylines in public power, and The Center on Municipal Capital Markets (CMCM) at The University of Texas at Austin is glad to host a conversation among law, finance, policy, technology, and academic leaders. Load growth from data centers is the largest demand shock public power utilities have faced in decades, and the municipal market is a key financing mechanism. It is the story of how massive AI investment routes through the municipal market and/or other creative structures. How are these deals and contracts structured? Who bears the demand risk? What is the credit/lender view on concentrated load and single-customer credit exposure? Where bond counsel is drawing tax-exempt lines? What is the technology industry’s perspective regarding speed-to-power, contract structure, and cost? All these questions will be discussed at the event.
