A poverty simulation is an interactive experience designed to give participants a glimpse into the challenges faced by individuals living in poverty. The simulation will be facilitated by staff and volunteers from the Central Missouri Community Action organization. A poverty simulation is an interactive experience where participants take on the roles of low-income families, navigating challenges like finding food, shelter, and other basic necessities within a simulated time period, usually representing a month, to gain a firsthand understanding of the complexities and struggles faced by people living in poverty; this is done by interacting with various community resource stations like a “grocery store,” “social services office,” and “employer” while facing limitations like limited income and specific family situations, all while being facilitated by volunteers playing roles like landlords or utility collectors; the simulation concludes with a debriefing session where participants discuss their experiences and insights about poverty.
This event is open to members of the community and First Baptist Church. Anyone curious about the challenges of living in poverty is welcome to register.
