The Potomac Playmakers is proud to present the first show of the 2025-2026 Season, the powerful drama Second Samuel by Pamela Parker! With a healthy dose of humor and a little added music, Second Samuel questions some of the most divisive issues of the 21st century. In the play, it was a simpler time in the late 1940s, especially in southern Georgia, and most specifically in a sleepy little town called Second Samuel. Bernard Flat, an autistic young man affectionately nicknamed “B Flat” by his friends, introduces us to the townspeople as they move through the chores and activities of their days. The Great Depression was quickly fading into memory, the war had been won, the election was now over, and "Give 'em Hell Harry" was still president. It had been an exciting time for sure, but the folks in Second Samuel were ready for things to settle down and get back to normal. Except—this was the summer Miss Gertrude passed away, and deep, dark secrets were about to be revealed. Nobody could have imagined how the death of one sweet little old lady would turn the entire town upside down, leaving everybody in Second Samuel wondering if anything would ever be normal again! The story of Second Samuel steps out of all stereotypes and any traditional narrative bounds. There really isn’t an individual hero, no specific protagonist other than the town itself. This tale is about issues, decisions and consequences that are faced by the small community of Second Samuel GA, and ultimately, by each of our communities today. Dealing with issues of Women’s Rights, Race, Gender, and Equality, the show forces the audience to ask, what does “Love Your Neighbor” look like?
Directed by Cathy James and Kim Jones with kind permission of Dramatic Publishing Company, Second Samuel stars Jim Zuna, Dan Ritchey, Brian McClinton, Dylan Rinker, Tom Doty, Lisa Hatch, Heather Hughes, Jade Harper, Susan Kleit, Mark Perman, and Dalton Korrell. The show will run on September 5-7, 2025 and September 12-14, 2025 at The Potomac Playmakers Performing Arts Center, located at 17303 W. Washington Street, Hagerstown, Maryland 21740. Showtime will be 8:00 p.m. for the Friday performances, and 3:00 p.m. for the Saturday and Sunday afternoon matinee performances. General Admission tickets for all performances are $20, and $15 for Senior Citizens aged 65 and older.
