Systematic poisoning led to their extirpation from the state in the 1960s, and in 2008 the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) began reintroduction efforts on southeastern Arizona’s Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Through cooperative agreements between AZGFD, the Bureau of Land Management, State Lands, Pima County, and private landowners, AZFD aims to help black-tailed prairie dogs once again thrive in southern Arizona’s grasslands.
Join Jennifer Presler, Nongame Birds and Mammals Biologist for AZGFD, for a chat about her favorite grassland ecosystem engineer, the small but mighty black-tailed prairie dog. Learn about prairie dog biology, the importance of re-introduction, and their role as a keystone species in Arizona's grasslands. She will discuss challenges she faces furthering species recovery efforts as well as the importance of collaboration with partners, other agencies, and cooperating land managers.
The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the potluck dinner beginning at about 5:30 p.m. (we'll announce when it's time to eat!). The presentation will immediately follow the meal. Come join us, invite a friend, and bring a dish to share. We also have a collection bin for food items to donate to the Santa Cruz food bank!
