Post Cards from Mecca with Steve Lech

Susie Keef Smith and her cousin Lula Mae Graves ventured into the remote deserts east of the Salton Sea to document a vanishing way of life. Using a large-format camera, they traveled by burro, foot, and Ford to capture images of prospectors, stage stops, and breathtaking desert landscapes. Although nearly forgotten, many of their photographs have been recovered, offering a rare and captivating glimpse into one of the lesser-known deserts of the American West.
