About this Event

Meet the infulential artist Peter Kennedy who has been experimenting with art forms and concepts for decades in conversation at State Library.

Born from a need for gallery space for artists that didn’t fit the mould of the late 1960s Sydney art establishment, a young man from Brisbane not only co-founded Australia’s earliest and most influential independent artist-run space, Inhibodress, he also shaped a new genre of art.

Peter Kennedy’s decades-spanning career has consistently pushed the boundaries of what we consider art, by way of installation, sound and video, and other experimental conceptual practices. Peter’s 1970 debut solo exhibition was the first to present neon light artworks in Australia, aptly titled Neon-Light Installations.

By the late 1970s Peter’s focus had shifted to film, photography, performance and also drawing; his works often engaging with political and social events happening around him, and to him.

With hardly a gap in his resume, Peter Kennedy has created a body of work that maps the strength of conceptual art in Australia over decades.

This event will feature a screening of Peter Kennedy's interview from the James C Sourris Collection of Artist Interviews, followed by a Q&A session.
