About this Event

Join us for some hands-on portraiture education! The first session of the day will take place at our event space behind our rental department where attendees will learn how to utilize and control a single light source.

Following that attendees are invited to hang out with Pro Photo Staff and Kate Hailey at the Nob Hill Food Carts for lunch and socialization before our afternoon session.

The afternoon session - Creating Portraits on Location - will take place at and around the Montgomery Park building where Kate will show attendees how to create stunning portraits with available light, adding reflectors, and small off-camera flash.

ONE LIGHT PORTRAITS - 8/10/2024 10:00am-12:00pm, Pro Photo Supply Event Center

During this in-person hands-on workshop, Kate Hailey will show you how to get the most out of a single, small light source.

Pairing small flash with modifiers and directionality, you can create truly fantastic portraits.

These techniques can also be applied to other genres, like food and product photography.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn, hands-on in this session, gaining experience and confidence in exploring off-camera studio lighting.

What to Bring

- Camera with a hotshoe, with a fully charged battery, and memory card

- A lens in the 50-85mm range is recommended, but most zooms can also be great.

Experience Level: Camera - Intermediate; Lighting - Beginner

Attendees should have a good understanding of ISO, Aputure, Shutter Speed, and how to change these with ease on their camera. As well, know how to change flash settings in their camera menus. Some cameras may have limitations in working with the portable flashes.

CREATING PORTRAITS ON LOCATION - 8/10/2024 2:00pm-4:00pm, Montegomery Park Building and Surrounding Area

Through use of light we can create a mood, tell a story or highlight a face or form. Using available light can bring us lots of options, but also has limitations.

What if you want diffused light on a cloudless day?

What if you want bright light on a cloudy day?

This is where learning to add light is key.

During this workshop, Kate will review essential "available light" portrait techniques, as well as adding off-camera flash, and share her process on

  • Working with talent and posing
  • Finding unique backgrounds and compositions
  • Making the most of a single location
  • How to use small, portable flash units to create portraits that tell a story

This is a hands-on experience, which will include talent for the attendees to photograph, in real world situations.
