About this Event
Portrait Drawing Fundamentals

Ever wondered how artists achieve convincing proportions when drawing people? In this relaxed, practical workshop with artist and tutor Karen Harman, you’ll learn the fundamental measurements and proportions used to construct a portrait, giving you a reliable starting point for developing your own drawings.

What we’ll cover:
  • Standard facial proportions — learn the basic measurements and relationships between the features of the face.
  • Placing the features — understand where the eyes, nose, mouth, ears and other features sit in relation to one another.
  • Measuring and construction — use simple techniques to check proportions and build a portrait accurately.
  • From face to figure — discover how the proportions of the head relate to the wider body and how artists use the head as a unit of measurement.
  • Understanding the whole figure — explore basic relationships between the head, shoulders, torso, arms and legs.
  • Putting it into practice — apply the techniques through guided drawing exercises.

Who is it for?

This workshop is suitable for beginners and those looking to refresh or strengthen their drawing skills. No previous portrait-drawing experience is required.

You’ll leave with a better understanding of how proportion works and a set of practical techniques you can continue using in your own drawing.

Come along, draw, experiment and build confidence in understanding the human form.

Price: £80 per person, includes materials and equipment use.
