Porta Aperta – Immigration, Identity & Belonging

Porta Aperta is a series of in-person conversations created by Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada – West, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver and ITASA UBC, designed to support newcomers navigating life in Canada.

These meetings take place on selected Mondays at 6:00 PM at Osteria Al Centro and feature professionals who share practical knowledge on key topics relevant to newly arrived immigrants.

This upcoming session, held on April 27, features Silvia Talamonti, a Recognized Clinical Counsellor, presenting Immigration, Identity & Belonging: Finding Your Place Without Losing Yourself.
This session is designed for individuals and families navigating the emotional complexities of starting a new life in a different country.

The discussion will explore the often-overlooked personal and psychological challenges of immigration, including feelings of isolation, shifts in identity, parenting across cultures, and the impact on relationships. With a compassionate and practical approach, Silvia will guide participants through how therapy and self-awareness can support a stronger sense of belonging while staying connected to one’s roots.

This session centres on meaningful reflection and actionable insights across the following key areas:
Navigating Emotional Transitions: Understanding and managing feelings of isolation, uncertainty, and cultural displacement.
Identity & Cultural Integration: Finding balance between embracing a new culture while preserving your sense of self.
Family & Relationship Dynamics: Addressing challenges in parenting, partnerships, and communication within a new cultural context.
