Porch Talk: The Architect, the Artist, and the Client

The Dana-Thomas House did not come about overnight—it was the result of vision, determination, and the combined talents of three extraordinary individuals. In this Porch Talk, an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Historic Interpreter will introduce you to the architect, the artist, and the client—each of whom played a crucial role in the home’s construction, design, and elaborate details.

Commissioned in the early 1900s as Frank Lloyd Wright’s first “blank check” project, the Dana-Thomas House became a canvas for innovation. You’ll hear how Wright’s groundbreaking architectural style, the artist’s distinctive decorative vision, and the client’s bold ideas came together to create one of Springfield’s most celebrated landmarks.

Through stories of creativity, collaboration, and persistence, you’ll gain insight into how these three figures worked together to shape the home we know today—inside and out. From sweeping Prairie Style lines to intricate handcrafted details, every element reflects their shared commitment to beauty, function, and originality.

Porch Talks at the Dana-Thomas House are hosted on the porches of this historic Frank Lloyd Wright–designed home. Programs are free, open to all ages, and require no reservations. Please meet at the front door facing Lawrence Avenue.
