About this Event
Form in Flux combines exploratory works by Mexican sculptor Pablo Olivera and Texan architectural designer Clayborne Stocker.
Pablo Olivera began sculptural explorations in the 1980s, using red clay as the main medium.
During that time, some of his close friends "Manuel Felguerez and Federico Silva" inspired and supported Olivera's work by sharing ideas and knowledge to improve and evolve his art pieces; a reason why Olivera started exploring stone, concrete and steel.
Olivera established the theme of "circles" due to his interest in its relationship with the cyclical, with the movement and the cosmic, thus giving steel (a cold material) the warmth and roundness of the organic matter.
The black or red applied in some of his pieces is used more as a value than a color. The intention is to give the sculpture a presence where its forms, lines, and shadows contrast with the space.
Each piece is the result of the previous ones, and gives a guideline for those that follow, they are twinned in time.
“Sculpture is a form that builds a space with the interrelation of isolated elements.
Space, which emerges as a rupture in matter, is also the result of a process, that is to say, it arises from the projection of a plane in time”. - Pablo Olivera
Clayborne Stocker's studies in architecture at Mississippi State University were a pivotal period in his life. It was here that he began to merge his traditional artistic education with architectural forms and patterns, developing his approach to designing modern geometric forms. His work is characterized by meticulous attention to composition, details, and a deep understanding of spatial dynamics.
His artistic journey has been significantly influenced by several historical figures and movements. Josef Albers, known for his work in color theory and geometric abstraction, has inspired Stocker’s exploration of color and form. Carlos Cruz-Diez, a master of kinetic and optical art, has influenced Stocker’s use of visual perception and movement in his pieces. El Lissitzky, a key figure in the Russian Constructivist movement, has shaped Clayborne’s approach to integrating art and architecture, emphasizing functionality and modernism.
Rembrandt’s mastery of light and shadow has also left a lasting impact on Stocker’s work, guiding his use of contrast and depth. Additionally, the rich artistic traditions of ancient Aztec and Mayan art and architecture have provided a cultural and historical context that enriches his designs. The geometric precision and symbolic significance resonate deeply in his creations.
After moving to Mexico, Stocker’s artistic journey took a significant turn when his wife introduced him to Pablo Olivera. This meeting allowed him to delve into Pablo’s creative process and discover their shared design philosophies and techniques. Their collaboration highlights the synergy between their artistic visions, blending traditional influences with contemporary practices of spatial order.
Clayborne Stockers’s work continues to evolve, drawing from a diverse array of influences and experiences. He believes his works reflect God’s order in discovering patterns, forms, hierarchies, and techniques embedded in the structure of reality. His dedication to both art and architecture is evident in his innovative designs and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual and spatial expression.
