Pop Up Event: Data Analytics - Try Coding Workshop

Put simply, Data Analysts use numbers to tell a story. Using technical skills like SQL, Excel and Tableau, they analyze data sets, interpret them and share their findings with key stakeholders. Their communication and presentation skills are just as important as their technical skills.

Data Analysts work in every industry and are a needed and valued part of their organization. Example projects a Data Analyst might work on include identifying the products that will sell the most on Black Friday, understand how demographics influence credit scores or identify patterns in housing segregation based on race, among other things.

In this beginner-level workshop, you will use Data Analytics to analyze data from Goodreads, identify the best brands of ramen and examine passenger data from the Titanic. During this introductory event, you will get a feel for a day-in-the life of the workflow of a Data Analyst and leave the class with the fundamental skills necessary to explore a dataset using SQL and Python.

We designed this workshop for people who are interested in learning more about Data Analytics. Turing School of Software & Design currently does not teach SQL, Python or Data Analytics, but our graduates sometimes use these skills in their careers and we’d like to explore them with you in a series of pop up workshops. Schedule

• Online class on Thursday, June 24 from 1:00pm - 5:30pm MST (with breaks!)
• You will receive the Zoom link for the class upon registration.

Attendees should be comfortable with navigating the basic operations of a computer. You will be expected to use the following skills: typing, copying and pasting text, navigating the internet through a browser, and conversing via a video chat.

If you've been curious about working in the tech industry or are thinking about changing careers, but aren’t sure what industry you’d like to join, this class is for you to explore languages you are curious about. There are no prerequisites for this course, so just bring your creative and playful mind (and a computer!) to this interactive workshop!

1. How will I connect to the virtual workshop?

You will need a computer for this workshop that can connect to the internet and operate Zoom. We recommend that you download Zoom now to ensure it is compatible with your computer and that you are using the most updated version.

2. When will I receive the Zoom link?

Zoom information will be sent to you through Eventbrite after you register for the event.

3. What equipment should I have for this online workshop?

A laptop or computer that can connect to the internet via a web browser. We recommend using headphones to minimize distractions and ensure you can access the information. It will also be beneficial to find a quiet working space where you will be able to focus during the duration of the course.

4. I want to attend but I can't afford it. Are there any scholarships available?

We are offering scholarships on a limited basis for students with financial need. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

5. Are kids welcome?

This is a course designed for professional level adults and is not created with kids in mind. We ask that individuals under age 17 years old do not register and/or attend.

6. I’m already a little bit practiced in Data Analytics - will I still benefit from this course?

This course is designed for people who are brand new to Data Analytics and have never tried it before. That doesn’t mean that those with some experience aren’t welcome or will not benefit from it, but some parts may be a review.

7. What is the refund policy?

If for any reason you can’t make it to the event, tickets are refundable up to 24 hours before. If the event has passed then we are happy to transfer your ticket to any upcoming Try Coding workshop.

8. I am interested in Turing’s Back-End or Front-End Software Development programs, will this class be a good fit for me to attend?

Probably not. This workshop will cover languages and specific material relevant to Data Analytics, not Back-End or Front-End Programming. If you are interested in our Software Development programs, please register for one of our Try Coding Back-End, Front-End workshops or Weekend Workshops. However, all of our Try Coding workshops are taught in instructional styles that mirror our teaching practices for our Software Development program. Coming to this workshop will give you a good feel for what a day in the life of a Turing School student would look like.

9. Why is Turing School offering Data Analytics Try Coding workshops if the school doesn’t teach Data Analytics?

Since 2014, we have a proven track record launching over 1,000 careers in software development and related technical roles. We’re conducting a series of Try Coding workshops outside of Back-End & Front-End Software Development to better understand what languages and technical skills our community is interested in learning more about.

10. I am brand new to tech and am unsure what field I would like to study - what type of Try Coding workshop should I attend?

We recommend trying as many different Try Coding workshops as possible if you are just starting out on your journey into a career transition into tech. Attending a workshop, building a project and spending the time deep diving into a potential new field will be one of the best ways to determine whether Software Development, Data Analytics or another related technical role is the right fit for you.
