Since we first learned to capture a face, humanity has been fascinated by the portrait. It shows us a face. But how much does it really tell us about the person?
Poor Traits brings together nine contemporary artists exploring identity through the form of portraiture beyond physical appearance. Across painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video, and mixed media, the exhibition looks at how the self is constructed, performed, concealed, and remembered.
The title Poor Traits plays on the word “portraits.” While portraiture traditionally focuses on representing a person, the exhibition moves beyond physical likeness to explore the traits, contradictions, vulnerabilities, memories, and psychological complexities that shape who we are.
Rather than presenting a collection of portraits, Poor Traits offers a broader exploration of identity and what it means to be human.
