Poly Pocket came together when Katie Perman (voice) and Devin Hart (keys) decided they just wanted to make music that “feels good”. Drawing inspiration from jazz, r&b, and electronic music they joined with Peter Hendrickson (drums) and Kim Lesaca (bass) to create a live show that draws equally from Robert Glasper as it does from Massive Attack. Fueled by tight grooves, expressive
melodies, and immersive solos, the group takes the jazz form and
improvisational elements from jazz and applies them to music from a variety of genres, ranging from songs written by jazz greats like Herbie Hancock to new artists like Thundercat and Robert Glasper.
Katie Perman, Devin Hart and Peter Hendrickson studied jazz and contemporary music at MacEwan University; Kim Lesaca studied contrabass at the University of the Philippines. Perman, Hart and Lesaca teach at MacEwan University and obtained their Masters in Music and Sound from the University of West London, while Hendrickson went on to further studies at St. Francis Xavier University and with John Fisher (former instructor at the Percussion Institute of Technology in Los Angeles).
All four musicians are active not only in the Edmonton music scene, but also in the national music industry, having performed, toured and recorded with accomplished and award-winning Canadian musical artists.
