GGE Research Seminar
"Pollen and spores: morphology, classification and palaeoecological utility"
Dr Luke Mander
Senior Lecturer in Earth Sciences in the School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, The Open University
Thursday 4 May 2023
G72/TA2 Bennett Building, 1.00pm-2.00pm
Pollen and spores are beautiful microscopic objects with an outstanding fossil record. This talk begins with a brief overview of the functional biology of pollen and spores, before moving on to a visual and algorithmic examination of their morphology. The talk then outlines ways that pollen and spores can be classified—including both human and computational approaches—and discusses the palaeoecological utility of pollen and spores, with particular reference to the pre-Quaternary history of tropical rainforests. The talk ends with a brief consideration of emerging challenges in an era that is set to be dominated by artificial intelligence.
