Police Custody in Ireland

The upcoming Police Powers Bill and the recent Garda Inspectorate Report on Delivering Custody Services serve to focus our attention on the treatment of persons detained in police custody. Little attention has been paid to this issue previously in Ireland. This conference brings together, for the first time, experts who have been researching this issue and those with lived experience to discuss how people detained in police custody in Ireland are treated, as well as the challenges encountered by professionals working in this space. Issues such as vulnerabilities, oversight, the garda perspective, racism, and safeguards will be explored, as well as some comparison between Ireland and other countries. Findings from research on these themes will be presented and space will be made for discussions on how custody should be regulated in the future. The conference is being run in conjunction with the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society of Ireland.
