[A NEW MEXICAN BURIAL]
A New Mexican Burial, by JC Gonzo, is an ongoing multi-media project exploring the interconnections between the state’s cemeteries and its cultures, ecologies, and history. The integration of adobe, native plantlife, and metalwork that uniquely defines these cemeteries are entwined with surrounding resources, local customs, and their complex histories. They are a testament to ingenuity, cultural exchange, and tradition—and ultimately, are a constantly evolving reflection of the living. Ranging from abandoned to utilized, many New Mexican cemeteries stand as one of the only markers of a relatively recent past. Shaped by the world around them, cemeteries are also changing and evolving as divestment, shifting cultural attitudes, and displacement impact them over generations. Spurred by Gonzo’s personal inquiries on place, identity, and culture, the project contemplates how New Mexican cemeteries unite these themes. Additionally, A New Mexican Burial serves as a visual record of these ephemeral sites as they presently stand, using analog instant photography to mirror their unique materiality and fragility.
This exhibition and its newly generated works is supported in part by The City of Santa Fe Arts & Culture Department’s ‘Art is the Solution: Cultural Futures’ grant.
