COMMON STORE RULES FOR POKEMON CARD TRADING
General conduct
• Use designated areas: Trading should only happen at approved locations, such as a designated gaming table, to avoid blocking aisles or disrupting the retail area.
• Be respectful: Store owners enforce a code of conduct to ensure a friendly and respectful atmosphere. Abusive language or aggressive behavior is not tolerated.
• Supervise minors: If a minor is trading, a parent or guardian should be present to oversee the exchange to ensure it is fair and transparent.
Card Evaluation
• Agree on value: Traders are responsible for agreeing on the value of their cards. Many stores have resources, like price guides or internet access, to help determine a card's current market price.
• Check card condition: A card's condition is a major factor in its value. Stores expect traders to accurately assess and disclose any flaws, like creases, whitening, or edge wear, before finalizing a trade.
• No cash exchanges: In most cases, cash or store credit cannot be used as part of a player-to-player card trade. Trading is typically limited to card-for-card exchanges.
Store-specific policies
• Store staff do not mediate: The staff at the store will generally not mediate disagreements over trade fairness, but they will intervene if trading rules or the code of conduct are being violated.
• Selling cards for cash is not allowed: Trading between customers is distinct from selling to the store. Stores typically prohibit customers from making cash sales to each other on the premises.
• Participation fees: Some stores may charge a small fee to use their designated trading space during a Pokémon League or other organized event.
• Store buy-list priority: Some stores that buy cards from customers have a "buy-list." They may require traders to use a store's buy-list as the official valuation for a trade, or give priority to store transactions over customer trades.
Fair trading practices for players
Regardless of store rules, players should follow best practices to ensure fair and safe trading:
• Know your cards: Research the cards you want to trade and those you want to acquire so you understand their current market value.
• Protect your collection: Always store your valuable cards in protective sleeves or binders during a trading session.
• Communicate clearly: Discuss and agree on all trade details with your trading partner upfront to prevent misunderstandings.
