About this Event
Hello everyone!
This event is a small group guided movement workshop where you will learn all about the whimsical flow toy 'poi'; a flow prop originally used by Māori culture in New Zealand as a form of storytelling and performance. Now, commonly seen used by fire dancing acts and flow artists.
Sun, 12th March - Beginners workshop which will focus on the fundamentals of poi, poi movement theory and a few beginner tricks. Participants will gain ground work needed to carry them through their practice. Workshop will close with a short flow routine and meditation circle. **All levels welcomed**

About lead flow artist Rissi Shantel:
Rissi is a certified Breathe for Change yogi, preschool teacher, mindful movement guide and performing artist. She has performed with Pura Fire a fire and flow performance group based in St. Croix, USVI. Her relationship with the flow arts started at Fire Alchemy Retreat Summer 2022 led by the Ignite Fire Keepers in Oregon, IL. In the last 6 months her love of poi has been fueled by curiosity and she spends most of her days dancing while trying to harness the magic of a ball and string. She has carried her practice into the preschool where she guides her students through poi rhythmic movements, enhancing their motor skills, bilateral coordination, attention and other countless medicinal offerings. When she is not spinning poi, you can find her dancing in the kitchen, planning a trip back home to Belize or feeding her plant babies. She aspires to be a ripple of kindness and healing for her community through flow meditation, and to extend the brain based research on how poi movement can be a tool for managing anxiety and depression, self - confidence and attention deficits.
