Join us at Pohl Prairie (“Ames High Prairie”) for a fall seed harvest!Together, we’ll hand-harvest native seeds from the 22-acre prairie to help diversify and expand the prairie ecosystem. We'll collect seeds by hand or with clippers, gathering them into buckets or bags. This activity is beloved by our volunteers for its tranquility and the chance to connect more deeply with the prairie. We’ll begin the day with a brief introduction to Pohl before heading out into the prairie.
NEEDED ATTIRE & EQUIPMENT
· Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or hiking boots
· Long pants and layers. You may be working with thorny plants so sturdy clothes that can withstand rips (or you don't mind ripping) are encouraged.
· Work gloves (Leather is best - we'll have some extras if needed)
· Water bottle
· Feel free to bring other desired items like a hiking stick, binoculars, field guide and/or camera, if you like!

Please note: All volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace and comfort level.
· No experience necessary
· Children and families welcome
· There will be no restroom onsite
· This site may have ticks, poison ivy, mosquitoes, plants with thorns or other natural hazards
· You will be asked to acknowledge a liability waiver when you register
ABOUT POHL PRAIRIE
This 22-acre designated state preserve harbors a small tallgrass prairie remnant within Ames city limits. Spared from development by popular vote in 1971, the prairie still exists today as an environmental education area and a relic of the vegetation that once dominated Iowa’s landscape. While Pohl Prairie is owned by the school district, INHF has agreed to take on land stewardship responsibilities.
