About the Workshop
“Appalachian Poetry and Self-Definition “
This workshop is meant to examine the works of Appalachian poets as an introduction into using poetry as a means of capturing a more holistic vision of place. We will be reading poems from Marc Harshman, Nikki Giovanni, Frank X Walker, Tom Andrews, and Irene McKinney. In these close readings, the focus will be on the elements of storytelling and place that bring these pieces to life alongside discussions particular to the stereotypes of Appalachia and the Rustbelt Midwest, which is very familiar to Ohio. From here we’ll pivot into generative discussions with a space for participants to generate their own poems/short prose pieces, with time allotted to share for those who wish to share.
About the Poet
Poet Torli Bush is from Webster Springs, West Virginia. They hold a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University and an MFA in Creative Writing from West Virginia Wesleyan College. In 2025, Torli received a Pushcart Prize, and their first poetry collection, , was a finalist for the Weatherford Award. Torli is currently a poetry editor for Heartwood Literary Magazine.

Registration closes on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 8 p.m.EDT. Any handouts will be sent to registrants at that time.
