Are you a poet in waiting? Or have you had your poetry published but are looking for opportunities to hone your craft? Brighton Book Festival invites you to a workshop unlike any other.
At the Poetry Workshop, you'll get the opportunity to learn new skills in writing and performance from established Brighton-based poets Roy McFarlane and AFLO. the poet. You'll also be able to network with other poets and build your writing community. For those who want to, there's the chance to perform your work in the evening at the Poetry Cafe.
Roy McFarlane was born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents and now lives in Brighton. He has held the roles of Birmingham’s Poet Laureate, Starbucks’ Poet in Residence and Canal Laureate. His debut poetry collection, Beginning With Your Last Breath (2016) was followed by The Healing Next Time (2018), which was nominated for the Ted Hughes Award and Jhalak Prize. He is the editor of Celebrate Wha? Ten Black British Poets From The Midlands (2011).
AFLO. the poet is an award-winning Brighton-based spoken word artist, activist and academic who brings her life experiences to bear in spoken word performances aimed at disrupting the status quo and inspiring social change. Influenced by hip-hop from a young age, she uses poetry as a vehicle to address topics like racism and mental health. AFLO. is currently an in-house artist for Brighton Dome.
