Michael Hettich & Al Maginnes will visit City Lights on Saturday, June 6th at 3:00pm to read from their poetry collections, Waking Up Alone and Second Line: a sequence. Michael Hettich was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1953 and grew up in New York City and its suburbs. He has lived in upstate New York, Colorado, Northern Florida, Vermont, Miami, and Black Mountain, North Carolina, where he now lives. He has published over a dozen books and chapbooks of poetry, and his work has appeared widely in journals and anthologies.
Michael Hettich’s awards include The Hudson-Fowler Award in Poetry (2023), The Brockman-Campbell Award from the North Carolina Poetry Society (The Halo of Bees), several Florida Individual Artists Fellowships, a Florida Book Award, The Tampa Review Prize in Poetry, the David Martinson–Meadow Hawk Prize, and the 2020 Lena M. Shull Book Award. He often collaborates with visual artists, musicians, and fellow writers. He has two adult children, Matthew and Caitlin, and two grandsons, Owen and Leo Sharpe.
Al Maginnes was born in Massachusetts and grew up in several states. He has degrees from East Carolina University and the University of Arkansas. He is the author of fourteen collections of poems, most recently Fellow Survivors: New and Selected Poems (Redhawk Publications, 2023), and his writing appears widely. After nearly forty years of teaching, he has retired and now lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he tries new things and ponders what comes next.
