This is a two day weekend writing workshop that takes place 1:30 - 5:30 pm, Saturday & Sunday August 16 & 17 at the Inprint House, 1520 West Main Street, Houston 77006.

Timothy Green, editor of the poetry magazine Rattle & Katie Dozier, author of Watering Can, and co-author of Hot Pink Moon, will co-lead this class on Hot Haibun: Poetry That Sparks.

An old form is catching fire in the poetry world! Popularized by the great Basho in 17th-century Japan, haibun weave prose and haiku into a dynamic, evocative whole. Over the last few decades, English-language poets have been pushing the form in exciting new directions. In "Hot Haibun," you’ll explore the rich history of haiku and haibun, from Basho’s timeless wanderings to contemporary innovations. The class will start by unlocking the misunderstood magic of haiku itself—which is not a matter of counting syllables, but instead, as Tim puts it, the creation of “two worlds in one breath.” The course will then focus on the art of making “leaps” and “sparks”—those electrifying shifts that ignite meaning and emotion.
