April is National Poetry Month and also Jazz Appreciation Month.
What better time than now to present Poetry & Jazz?
Jasmin Williams– vocalist, songwriter and performer of the spoken word– is an exciting new voice on the Santa Fe music scene. With a unique mixture of jazz, funk and soul, her performances pull her audience into a rich and intimate space. She began her jazz journey in Philadelphia, toured Europe and Japan, and recently arrived in Santa Fe from Harlem, NY to call The City Different home. Most notably, Williams has performed with Mercer Ellington in Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert. She has also performed in numerous jazz festivals, including the Afro-American Museum’s “Jazz ‘Till Sunrise, Jazz Under The Stars“, Mill Creek Jazz Festival, Jazz Vespers, Jambalaya Jam Jazz Festival, the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Yokohama, Japan, and at Antieau Gallery New Orleans during the 50th Jazz & Heritage Festival, among others.
John Rangel is a multi-talented musician of the highest caliber. Jazz pianist, composer and guitarist, as well as movie-maker, Rangel has been a mainstay on the New Mexico jazz scene for more than 15 years. A classically-trained pianist, Rangel cites early influences from J.S. Bach and Stravinsky to Ray Charles, Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson. In the early 90’s, he immersed himself in the vibrant culture of Leimert Park. Known as the “African Greenwich Village,” it was the center of African-American Arts in LA, brimming with poets, artists, and musicians. That community has been a major influence on John’s spiritual intention and musical direction. Over his career he has explored a wide range of musical styles including Jazz, Classical, Film Music, Pop, Hi-Life, Salsa, Reggae, and Calypso. His versatility as a jazz pianist is evident in his work with artists as varied as Nat Adderly, Marcus Printup, Billy Higgins, Sam Rivers, Ravi Coltrane, Pharaoh Saunders, Bobby Shew, Tierney Sutton, Rosemary Clooney– and the full gamut of leading New Mexico jazz musicians.
